About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join BGS to lead on geothermal science direction, scientific delivery, and utilisation of the UK Geoenergy Observatory in Glasgow. Advancing the evidence base and innovations in shallow geothermal from the unique subsurface observatory, this senior role will deliver impacts towards decarbonisation of heat/cool/storage.

The successful candidate will work closely with, and be supported by, the BGS ‘geoenergy’ senior leadership team.

You will manage a programme of projects developing up to £500k plus, lead multi-disciplinary teams of BGS scientists, collaborative projects with academia, industry, and government, as well as being the key contact for a wide range of stakeholders. Your key duties / responsibilities will include:

Strategic Direction

  • Responsibility for strategic science direction, ideas, plans and communication to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Joint Responsibility with the UKGEOS Operations Manager for strategic direction in growing the Glasgow Observatory.

Leading science

  • Lead and deliver a portfolio of multi-disciplinary science and data projects around the Glasgow Observatory and mine water geothermal/mine underground thermal storage.
  • Responsibility for BGS-led science specific to the Glasgow Observatory.

Developing funding opportunities

  • Responsibility for BGS and collaborative scientific and innovation grant applications including utilisation of the Glasgow Observatory.
  • Joint Responsibility with UKGEOS Operations Manager and BGS Business Development for generating external business for utilisation of the Glasgow Observatory.

Delivering Benefit

  • Responsibility for delivering the scientific and impact parts of the benefits realisation plan.

Managing data activities

  • Involvement in BGS environmental monitoring outputs and geothermal energy datasets.

About you

You will have a first degree in a relevant subject plus a PhD (or MSc and comparable work experience), plus significant relevant industry, academic or regulatory experience working in a research environment.

You will have substantial amount of specialist scientific expertise and contribution via outputs/impacts to advancing shallow geothermal/underground thermal storage, along with evidence of winning funding. In addition, we are looking for demonstrable scientific project leadership and management of a portfolio of projects within large, multidisciplinary teams to deliver clear scientific outputs on time and to budget.

The Role:

A great opportunity has arisen at Hovis for a Multiskilled Engineer to join our team at Glasgow and to be the driving force behind the best quality brand in bakery. You will have an opportunity to be responsible for generating improvements across our bakery sites and working collaboratively with the rest of the Engineering team and wider site.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Carry out planned routine and reactive maintenance repair work on all plants and equipment at the bakery site.
  • Complete written reports on maintenance work carried out and identify future work.
  • Plan and implement improvement ideas to increase the throughput and efficiency of the operating plants.
  • To ensure the best possible resolution is achieved to those issues experienced, to meet the reliability requirements of the Bakery production schedules.

To be part of a team providing essential maintenance operations, whilst maintaining Health & Safety and Food Safety Standards, abiding by GMP and food handling hygiene standards to provide maximum manufacturing efficiency.

Ideal experiences / Qualifications / capabilities:

  • Have completed a recognised Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship
  • Proven Electrical Engineering experience within a Manufacturing environment
  • Experience on PLC controlled process equipment and plant
  • 18th Edition IEE wiring regulation pass

Desirable:

  • Strong Engineering competence on production plant and auxiliary equipment
  • Experience with Permit to Work systems
  • Experience with COSHH regulations
  • Experience of continuous improvement
  • Pest Control Awareness
  • Basic Food Hygiene
  • Able to self-manage and prioritise own workload to satisfy commitments and meet agreed deadlines
