Job description: An opportunity has arisen to join the Gastroenterology team at St George’s Hospital, Tooting in novel and exciting position as a Clinical Research Fellow in Endoscopy with additional training in research, education, publishing and leadership.The clinical aspects of the post are in luminal gastroenterology and endoscopy, the post providing excellent exposure to general luminal gastroenterology, IBD, GI bleeds and advanced endoscopy.This endoscopy based post would suite a dynamic individual looking to take an OOPE to extend and widen their experience and training in endoscopy. It would provide an opportunity for additional training in advanced endoscopy experience and widen their experience with exposure to research methodology, publishing and leadership training.

Main duties of the job

Full time, with out of hours service/income from the regional GI bleed rota.Clinical activity includes out-patient clinics and endoscopy at SGH or QMH.The trainee will also participate in the out-of- hours GI bleed Rota across St George’s, Croydon and Epsom/St Helier’s Trusts which offers excellent experience and is paid a separate on-call supplement.Research/Education:Enrolment at St George’s University of London and Kingston University and working towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare research skills and methods or healthcare education. There will be opportunities to become involved in on-going research projects.Publishing: Experience of editing the quarterly journal Gastroenterology Today and working with the BMJ point of care team on the Ulcerative Colitis management guidelines. Opportunities for case reports/reviews/abstract publications. Advanced endoscopy training: The post will involve advanced endoscopy training (flexible to suite needs of successful applicant). This could include ERCP, EUS, advanced polypectomy. Completion of the endoscopy train the trainers course and participation in delivery of basic endoscopy training courses will be encouraged.

Experience
Essential

  • Independent upper GI endoscopist with JAG sign off
  • Experience of endoscopic management of GI bleeds
  • Experience of lower GI endoscopy
  • Experience of audit and research methodology
  • ST4+ gastro/hepatology training post or equivalent gastroenterology experience

Desirable

  • Independent lower GI endoscopist

Qualifications and Training
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP
  • Full GMC Registration

Skills
Essential

  • Computer skills including the ability to manage databases and image processing systems, which generate reliable research and clinical outcome data sets
  • Understand principles of audit
  • Understand principles and able to understand research results

Knowledge
Essential

  • Good medical knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Clear, legible documentation

Desirable

  • Some evidence of involvement in research or presentations at meetings/publications
  • Research GCP training or willingness to undertake this prior to commencing post
  • Knowledge of use of statistics for scientific research
