Job description: Our client is a global multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy, who are looking to bring on Principal Consultant with freshwater EIA experience to offer support across an ever-increasing variety of Aquatic projects. The role is a remote, offering brilliant flexibility for employees with the option to work in any of their UK offices if desired.

The role:

A Principal EIA Consultant within the freshwater team you would be tasked with working closely alongside a team of intra-disciplinary experts, offering expertise on UK conservation / environmental processes to support external agencies across the water, environment, and energy industries to ensure the protection of the UK’s aquatic environment. Operating not only as a project manager you will be expected to design scopes, complete and review; technical reports, EIAs (water quality, fisheries, and sediment quality) and Water Framework Directives. Additionally, experience and desire to engage in tendering and marketing within you field will both be considered valuable assets.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• MSc, PhD or equivalent professional experience within an environmental field
• 4 years’ professional EIA experience (entirely freshwater advantageous)
• Familiarity engaging on multifaceted environmental projects.
• Design, management, and review of water related EIA, HRA and WFD’s.
• GIS software package knowledge is beneficial.
• Experience working alongside stakeholders (particularly SNCBs)
• Line management experience (desirable)
• Full UK driving license (non-essential)
• Membership or working towards professional body / chartership.

Due to strong and sustained growth in our Sustainable Water Management business, we are seeking experienced applicants to join our team of 300 water science and engineering professionals. Applicants are invited to further develop our senior level technical capability in water environment assessment to support delivery of a range of project work, including planning and environmental permit applications for major infrastructure development, and planning and environmental studies for water companies and environmental regulators.

We are looking for a proficient and authoritative professional who has a specialisation in at least one of the key water environment disciplines (e.g. water quality, hydrology, geomorphology, hydroecology, marine science), but also has sufficient familiarity with the suite of water related disciplines to be able to lead teams on technically complex projects for a range of clients.

The appointment would be at Principal Consultant, Associate or Associate Director grade, depending on experience. We can be flexible on location within the UK and offer a true hybrid work arrangement. Your new role, what’s involved?

You will contribute to a diverse range of projects but the main focus of your work is likely to be EIA and WFD assessments and environmental permit applications for major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas and water resources planning and environmental impact projects for the UK water sector. Your work will be varied but will include technical, management and commercial responsibilities.

Responsibilities will include:

• Playing a leading role in project delivery, including managing the interface with clients and internal stakeholders. Supervising, coordinating and reviewing the inputs of others within the business to deliver high quality technical outputs that meet client requirements
• Working with senior colleagues in the Sustainable Water Management and Earth and Environment teams to develop business opportunities and prepare successful proposals
• To manage or direct projects effectively, balancing programme, budget and quality requirements, and ensuring that the highest health and safety standards are adhered to
• Providing technical guidance, training and support to junior colleagues
• Playing a key role in growing WSP’s technical capability, knowledge and innovation base to develop new services for our clients

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

Skills / Experience

• Experience working in hydrology, flood risk management, water quality, geomorphology, hydroecology or marine science, at least some of which should have been in consultancy
• Demonstrable experience of leading or major contributor to technical inputs and teams for successful project delivery for planning and permitting for major infrastructure projects. This could include preparation of water EIA, FRA and WFD inputs to planning applications, participation in DCO examinations or planning inquirys, and developing applications for environmental permits. The main focus of the role will be on inland surface waters, but experience of delivering assessments in estuarine and coastal waters is also desirable
• Excellent understanding of the Water Framework Directive and its application for management of the water environment in the UK
• Proven track record in effective delivery of complex, high profile projects for the water environment; in particular, experience of the Development Consent Order planning regime for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects in the UK is essential.
• Excellent knowledge of the regulatory context for planning and EIA in the UK
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Successful track record in managing client and stakeholder relationships
• You should have practical project management experience, including management of project teams, and be comfortable managing challenging projects

Qualifications

• A first degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science or engineering discipline is essential
• An MSc or PhD in hydrology, water quality, geomorphology or marine science is desirable
