The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. State Fragility initiative (SFi) is an IGC initiative that catalyses new thinking, develops more effective approaches to addressing state fragility, and supports collaborative efforts to take emerging consensus into practice. SFi brings together robust evidence and practical insight to produce actionable, policy-focused guidance on state legitimacy, state effectiveness, private sector development, and conflict and security.

The Policy Economist, State Fragility initiative will work as part of the SFi team bringing economic insight to fragile contexts, including

  • National level engagements with policymakers undergoing pivotal moments, including SFi’s engagement in Yemen.
  • Synthesising research for a policy audience, alongside developing policy recommendations that respond to a policy need.
  • Facilitate new research that addresses specific policy challenges.
  • Contributing to SFi’s global engagement, including DFI Fragility Forum
  • Support on programme management and grant reporting.

The successful applicants will have:

  • A MSc/MPA/MPP degree in economics, public policy/administration, development economics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of policy-relevant economic research and its application to fragile settings.
  • Ability to convey complex research findings and relevant policy ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to plan and organise own workload to balance multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Track record of successfully working as part of a team.

This is a full-time open-ended appointment until 30 September 2026, subject to funding. It is based at the IGC Head Office within LSE, London.
