The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position at the assistant or associate professor level in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD). The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, one of three departments in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, offers a course-based Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MScSLP), a two-year program designed to develop leaders in speech-language pathology through excellence in research, education and citizenship. The program is designed to provide students with the academic and clinical skills required to be eligible for certification through Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and registration or licensure by provincial regulatory bodies. A thesis-based option within the MScSLP is also offered, as well as a combined MSc/PhD program that allows a select group of highly motivated students to complete the MScSLP and the PhD in rehabilitation sciences within a single integrated program of study. Faculty members of the CSD department are actively involved in the MSc and PhD thesis-based degree programs in Rehabilitation Science offered through the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The Department of CSD is among the largest speech-language pathology education programs in Canada. The Department currently consists of 11 tenure track and 7 academic teaching faculty members, supported by staff at the Department and Faculty level. Starting in Fall 2024, the MScSLP program will be offered in a distributed education model across 2 campuses in Alberta – Edmonton and Camrose. Approximately 90 students will be admitted in Fall 2024 across both campuses, with 20 of those seats reserved for students from Saskatchewan.

Faculty members have diverse research programs in areas including developmental language disorders and phonological development in children, literacy, multilingual language development, neurogenic communication disorders, speech science, hearing science and head and neck cancer rehabilitation. The department has community connections with several health care centres in Edmonton, including the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Faculty members have close connections (e.g., cross appointments and partnerships) with research and clinical institutes such as the , the and the .

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field, be an independent investigator or have the potential to develop a successful research program as an independent investigator in any of the Faculty and department’s areas of research excellence. Candidates with expertise in fluency, complex communication needs/autism spectrum disorders or dysphagia are encouraged to apply but all qualified candidates will be considered. The candidate will be a collaborative member of the department and faculty, and be committed to equity, diversity, inclusivity and Indigenous initiatives in research, teaching and service.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the entry to practice Masters of Science program in Speech Language Pathology, and supervise Masters and Doctoral students pursuing theses. This is a new post following a successful bid to Welsh Government Improvement and the appointee will join the wider Adult Mental Health Directorate within the UHB’s Mental Health Clinical Board.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £91,722 per annum to £119,079 per annum plus a further £26,672 per annum available in Commitment Awards. Consultants in Wales paid on one of the first three points of the substantive Consultant pay scale also receive a Wales recruitment incentive payment.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties will include:-

RC responsibility for all patients under the care of Eating Disorders Services. Assessment and treatment of individuals with an eating disorder and comorbid psychiatric and physical health problems. Psychiatric reviews. Liaison with local treatment services and partners. Attending team meetings. Clinical supervision of junior doctors, clinical staff and medical students. Clinical audit. Formulation of complex cases with medical and psychiatric needs. Continuing professional development. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team – reviewing patients and jointly managing them as required. The appointee will conduct assessments either singly or jointly with other members of the team and will offer supervision to the team as needed.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Academic interests will be encouraged research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine will be expected.
