Supporting the Raytheon Technologies CORE (Customer Oriented Results & Excellence) Operating System, Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) is looking for a dynamic, creative, and structured person willing to contribute to help P&WC meet business objectives through usage and implementation of continuous improvement and Lean manufacturing principles, practices, and tools. The student will be located within P&WC’s Halifax Operations facility and will be supervised and mentored by P&WC’s Principal Expert in continuous improvement/Lean manufacturing. This is a great opportunity because P&WC has only one CORE Principal and he will be sharing over 30 years of experience with the student. Duties will not be Halifax Operations specific as the student will be required to support CORE initiatives throughout all of P&WC’s global sites. The selected intern will be required to work with numerous P&WC personnel (shop employees, manufacturing analysts, suppliers, and manufacturing/quality engineers). Tasks will include application of continuous improvement methods such as value stream mapping, 5S, SIPOC, Capacity Analysis, OEE, balanced scorecards, Root Cause Analysis/problem solving, visual management, process mapping, skills matrix, RACI, and benchmarking. Additionally, facility layouts will be designed and modified using AutoCAD and Sketchup.

What your day to day will look like:

  • Analyze multiple types of data from Manufacturing, Quality, Assembly and Engine testing Domains.
  • Develop systems and structures that will standardize continuous improvement approaches throughout P&WC

The organization is looking for a dynamic, creative and organized individual who wants to contribute to the achievement of P&WC business objectives through the manufacturing and development of high-quality aeronautic parts. The candidate will be paired with a senior supervisor and will be assisting him/her across various meetings, interactions with the personnel, as well as in the making of decisions, all while obtaining the needed support from the team on site. The work environment is divided between desk work and on-the-field experience. However, given the particular context of COVID-19, it is possible that a portion is teleworking.

What your day to day will look like:

  • Manage employees in a unionized environment by working closely with the supervisor (ensure smooth day-to-day operations, assign tasks, act as a resource person for the department, apply the rules of the collective agreement).
  • Act as an agent of prevention and compliance with occupational health and safety rules.
  • Take charge and deploy strategies to reduce non-quality.
  • Take charge of projects (layout, health and safety, environment, productivity, etc.) allowing for the continuous improvement of the department.

What you need to be successful:

Must haves:

  • Be eligible to work in Canada
  • Be enrolled in a Canadian university throughout your internship
  • Be able to work on-site in the province where you are hired if applicable
  • French language (advanced level: spoken and written)
  • Currently pursuing studies in the field of Engineering, Human Resources (HR) or Operations and Production Management (OPM)

2024 Summer Engineering Co-Op openings (paid, with housing stipend)- Searching for Engineering students for our plant in Toronto, Ohio

*A minimum of a 3-month assignment. Part-time employment (20+hrs/week) for 6-months also qualifies.

Engineering Co-Op Summary

Partner with engineering teams to assist in projects, outages and mechanical breakdowns.

Essential Functions

Assist in developing, documenting, and improving preventive maintenance or continuous improvement programs in order to support the improvement of equipment availability and throughput.

Provide support for equipment failures and loss of production.

Assist in analyzing production delay data for establishing and documenting or modifying preventive maintenance tasks.

Provides support for problem resolution to facilitate faster improvements and improved working relationships.

Assist with Project Engineering duties.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Work with engineer(s) to prepare, coordinate and maintain schedules for extended production outages and major maintenance work.

Work with maintenance craftsmen and operations to meet department goals.
