Job description: This position is accountable to the Supervisor of Language Program for the planning, implementing, and evaluating a high-quality, outcome-focused Community Connections program funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The Community Connections program will build relations between recent immigrants and established volunteers from East Toronto neighbourhoods, public institutions and private sector businesses, with the goal of assisting newcomers to settle and integrate into Canada while building a welcoming, inclusive and diverse community. Due to WoodGreen’s multi-site locations, we reserve the right to relocate the incumbent to another site, in the same position performing the same duties, as may be dictated by program needs. Reasonable notice of such site relocation will be given.

What You Will Do

  • Responsible for implementing all activities and meeting all qualitative and quantitative outcomes per the annual work plan developed with management within the stipulated timeframe.
  • Work with other members of the Community Connections team to determine mentorship needs, encourage the development of mentorship opportunities, and coordinate mentor retention strategies.
  • This position ensures that service is provided to newcomer clients in person and through e-services and that all program goals, statistics and outcomes are met.
  • Assist with outreach to the business community, professional associations, and other places to attract potential mentors.
  • Receive and review mentee applications, conduct in-depth interviews to determine current situation, goals and potential benefits from mentoring.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with mentors to determine key strengths (skills, experience, networking contacts, languages, cultural understanding) that are of potential benefit to mentees.
  • Develop and implement a process for matching mentees with mentors, including protocols and policies, leading to successful mentorship relationships and confirm matching arrangements, including mentoring objectives, period, frequency and method of meeting, location of one-on-one meetings to ensure safety and comfort of both parties; ensure both parties understand and sign the mentoring agreement.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Community Work, Adult Education or a related field.
  • Minimum two (2) year’s’ experience and proven track record in supporting newcomers to achieve goals in counselling, employment, or related environments.
  • Experience in career coaching is a fundamental aspect of the role.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Solid knowledge of different education fields and employment sectors
  • Experience providing guidance and support to clients seeking employment in various fields.
  • Previous experience in the non-profit social services sector is preferred.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to issues facing immigrants, immigrant communities, and internationally trained professionals and extensive knowledge of community-based orientation and support resources, activities and events within the GTA area.
  • Proven experience in facilitating group workshops on diverse topics, focusing on supporting newcomers in community integration and delivering engaging orientation and training sessions tailored to the needs of diverse audiences.

The Employer Liaison is mainly responsible for the creation of employment opportunities for ACCES clients. The Employer Liaison in this position works alongside the ACCES Employment Consulting team and will also work closely with all community partner agencies and employers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and implement marketing and outreach strategy to employers

Liaise with community professionals and employers to create competitive jobs and employment opportunities

Monitor all placements, oversee training plan development and conduct on-going follow-up to ensure successful employment outcomes for program participants

Integrate work with all ACCES staff, in particular with the Employment Consultant team

Provide employment preparation and employability group sessions and individual resource centre support when required

Qualifications and Experience:

Business Degree or equivalent

Lancaster Medical School is looking to appoint eight current medical students (Years 2-5) as Medical Connections Student Ambassadors to support the delivery of the Medical Connections programme.

Start Date: 26 February 2024
End Date: 30 March 2024
Location: On campus work

The role involves supporting the delivery of three workshops during March 2024. Ambassadors will facilitate breakout sessions within the workshops to develop students self-knowledge, confidence and teamwork skills. The ambassadors will provide peer support and facilitate discussion around progression through the medical degree offering insight around placements, electives, intercalation and other aspects of the medical degree.

Person Specification

  • Excellent communication skills and the confidence to talk to other students in small groups.
  • Enthusiastic attitude about your studies and Lancaster University.
  • A friendly approach to interacting with other students
