General Function

The Lifeguard Manager is responsible for assuring the safety of all aquatic participants in and around the pool area, maintain a safe pool environment, provide lifeguard and safety training, and assist with scheduling and managing lifeguards. As well as be responsible for administrative support for the aquatic department in various roles but foremost in the capacity assigned by the Aquatic Director.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

  • 1-2 years of experience as a lifeguard, swim instructor, LGI, or coordinator is preferred, but not required
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard license, YMCA Swim Instructor, CPR-Pro, AED, Emergency O2 and First Aid certification is required
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Functions as head lifeguard and lead teacher, guarding and teaching a minimum of 25 hours per week
  • Approximately 15 hours per week will be applied to administrative duties such as time sheets, returning phone calls and emails, and scheduling lifeguards and instructors
  • Supports the Aquatic Director in the creation and delivery of department schedules, employee engagement activities, facility communications, management of branch activity listings in ACTIVE, and statistical reporting for aquatic programs
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, American Red Cross and YMCA health and safety regulations as well as current ADA guidelines.
  • Maintains all Association and American Red Cross standards and guidelines while ensuring that updated documentation is met and available at all times
  • Performs other assigned duties as directed by Supervisor

Abilities & Skills

  • Ability to hear and observe distress signals in the water and anywhere in zone of responsibility
  • Skills to meet strength and lifting requirements

They are looking for a Fish & Aquatics Biologist who will lead a broad range of fish and aquatic habitat assessment, aquatic ecology, benthic invertebrate, field inventory/survey, stream classification, water quality monitoring, and construction environmental monitoring projects.

Remote / WFH / Hybrid: This position offers a hybrid/remote work arrangement, allowing you to live in or relocate to the Kootenays (Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie, Elko, etc)

Fieldwork: 25% – 30% during the summer months (travel 5%)

Salary: $85,000 – $120,000 (plus x1.5 overtime, personal and company performance bonuses, annual cost of living increases, RRSP contributions)

Responsibilities:

  • Design, perform and manage a diverse range of aquatic biota and habitat studies, including the collection, analysis and interpretation of biological, chemical, physical, and statistical data.
  • Conduct fish, aquatic, and benthic sampling using a variety of field gear, analytical equipment, and sampling techniques in a range of aquatic environments.
  • Coordinate, supervise and mentor environmental technicians and junior biologists.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports for clients, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Provide technical assistance in the preparation of environmental compliance and regulatory documents required for project approval and implementation, such as Environmental Assessments, EMPs, environmental protection plans, permits, licenses, and approvals.
  • Work alongside project managers and senior staff to manage, resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, invoicing, quality management, and day-to-day client liaison.
  • Develop and manage productive relationships with industry, government, First Nations, clients, other consultants and the communities where they work and live.
  • Apply novel solutions to problems and challenges to meet client and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare work plans and cost estimates for technical programs, and write high-quality proposals.
  • Contribute to the continued growth and scientific development of the team.

Requirements:

  • An MSc in aquatic ecology/biology or a related discipline, plus 7 or more years of relevant experience, OR a BSc in a related discipline, plus ten or more years of relevant experience; previous relevant consulting experience would be a definite asset.
  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Biologist (RPBio or PBiol).
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation relating to the aquatic environment and experience liaising with regulators, First Nations, and other key stakeholders.
  • Previous experience leading or participating in the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BC EAO) or the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) project applications would be an asset.
  • Expertise in scientific study design and implementation for field data collection.
  • Experience leading environmental effects assessment and monitoring studies.
  • CABIN certification and knowledge of statistical analysis and database software.
  • Swiftwater Safety Rescue Technician (SRT 2), Electrofishing, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification.
  • Valid First Aid, Swiftwater Safety Rescue, Electrofishing Crew Supervisor, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), Avalanche Skills Training Level 1, Snowmobile Safety and ATV/UTV Safe Operator certifications.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
