DUTIES

The Tutor I – Aboriginal Pathways to Health Careers provides tutorial services on an individual and group basis to Aboriginal students in the Aboriginal Pathways to Health Careers certificate program. The tutor reviews and clarifies course assignments, assists students in organizing their course assignments, study schedules, and with their preparation to write examinations. The Tutor organizes individual and group plans for course assignments and exams and assists the Aboriginal Pathways Coordinator in developing and assessing appropriate learning strategies.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Reviews and clarifies course assignments and lecture material with student(s) and options available to complete assignments.

  • Assists students in preparing for examinations.
  • Sets up, organizes and modifies individualized study timetables during semester.
  • Oversees the student’s activities and reports problems and/or changes to the Aboriginal Pathways Coordinator.
  • Liaises/consults with Aboriginal student service providers on campus and Elders in Residence to provide additional supports for Aboriginal students when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Grade 12 plus 2 years of post-secondary education including successful completion of 1st year university level Math, English and Biology courses

EXPERIENCE

  • One years’ related experience working in a capacity to support and guide students including experience working within the Secwepemc culture and consulting with Elders

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with others
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures
  • Experience in assisting Aboriginal student success

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Classroom environment, sitting for short periods of time

The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

Pay Band

$26.28 – $29.21 ( CUPE Grade 05 (90% – 100%) )

Salary rate

Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
