Wayne Rooney has launched a scathing assessment of Manchester United following their 4-3 Premier League defeat to Brentford, questioning Ruben Amorim’s tactical choices.
Amorim’s decision to start several academy players, including 17-year-old striker Chido Obi-Martin, left pundits baffled.
United trailed 4-1 before scoring twice late in a disjointed performance that extended their winless run to six games.
Rooney criticised the system, suggesting the use of wingbacks in a back five was tactically flawed due to a lack of pressing and positional awareness.
“There was a lack of movement and a lack of knowhow on the pitch. They’re launching balls to a 17-year-old with no support – I felt sorry for Obi,” he added.
Manchester United next face Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday, carrying a 3-0 advantage.
