The coffin of Pope Francis arrived at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on Saturday for burial, shortly after a solemn funeral held at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
According to AFP, the coffin was transported from the Vatican on a white popemobile, making its way through Rome as tens of thousands of mourners lined the streets to pay their last respects.
The Argentine-born pontiff, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88, was celebrated for his dedication to the poor and for being the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church.
Earlier, a massive crowd gathered at St. Peter’s Square to witness the funeral ceremony, which was attended by several world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Both leaders were reported to have briefly met inside the basilica before the service began.
Pope Francis, who served for 12 years, was known for his efforts to make the Church more inclusive and responsive to global issues.
