The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong advisory to the organizers of a planned nationwide protest, cautioning against the timing of the demonstration scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025—the same day declared by the Federal Government as National Police Day.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police expressed concern over the planned action by the “Take It Back Movement,” particularly as it coincides with a national event intended to honor the resilience and dedication of the Nigerian police officers.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, the police questioned the motive behind choosing National Police Day for such an action, describing it as a “mischievous” and potentially “unpatriotic” move.
According to the statement, “The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is however questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.”
The police noted that the commemorative event would host dignitaries from across the country and beyond, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats, in recognition of the vital role played by the police in maintaining national security.
The IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s respect for citizens’ rights and commitment to lawful engagement. However, he urged the protest organizers and prospective participants to instead consider dialogue and institutional channels to press their demands.
“The Nigeria Police Force advises the organizers to shelve this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous. Dialogue remains the best route,” the statement read.
April 7 was recently declared as National Police Day by the Federal Government in a move to institutionalize the annual celebration of the Nigeria Police Force and its contributions to peace and security across the country.
