Santos FC have confirmed that Neymar Jr. has tested positive for Covid-19 and will be sidelined once again, extending a frustrating spell of absences for the Brazilian forward.
The 32-year-old, who rejoined Santos in January following an injury-riddled stint with Al-Hilal, has featured in just 12 matches for his boyhood club due to ongoing fitness issues.
The club announced that Neymar began showing symptoms on Thursday, June 5, and has been in isolation since then.
“With a viral condition that began on Thursday, Neymar Jr. underwent laboratory tests, after evaluation by the Medical Department of Santos FC, which confirmed infection by Covid-19,” read an official statement.
“The player had already been away from activities and remains resting at home, undergoing symptomatic treatment.”
Neymar was already suspended for Friday’s match against Fortaleza, meaning the Covid diagnosis won’t affect immediate team plans.
Santos’ next fixture is against Palmeiras in nearly a month, following the Club World Cup break.
