Job Purpose/Summary
The Technical Services Engineer (Mechanical Emphasis) provides advanced technical engineering support regarding rotating equipment (pumps and turbomachinery) and other major mechanical equipment to Operations and Project Engineering. This role ensures compliance using engineering standards and industry best practices. The individual in this role may mentor early in-career Engineers and travel to field and vendor locations may be required up to 25% including Canada & USA locations. The Technical Services Engineer is a subject-matter expert on rotating equipment including pumps and turbomachinery with a diverse workload and can expect changes in work priorities and multiple projects with short turnaround times.
Job Responsibilities:
Partners with Project Engineering or Operations Engineering Teams to develop rotating equipment solutions.
Completes RFQ packages, bid reviews, and award recommendations for major mechanical equipment (e.g., pumps, compressors, turbines, meter skids, provers, valves, fittings, pipe, etc.).
Capital Expansion Project support including detail drawing reviews and Process Hazard Analysis.
Support for project team during the installation of equipment and perform site inspections as needed to ensure compliance with Plains and supplier requirements.
Support the commissioning of rotating equipment.
Develop, Review and Maintain assigned Company Operations and Maintenance Manuals and Procedures.
Manages company construction and equipment standards.
Reviews and proposes facility upgrades for reliability and/or efficiency.
Performs vendor qualification reviews and recommendations.
Visits suppliers for inspection and/or witness testing of equipment.
Visits field locations for equipment reviews, including new construction and troubleshooting.
Serves as company representative for company standards and research organizations (API, ASME, PRCI).
Provides broad technical support including but not limited to:
Rotating equipment (pumps, turbomachinery, etc.).
Measurement equipment (meter skids, LACTs and provers).
Material, equipment, and construction specifications.
Welding (API 1104 and ASME Section IX).
Support for preventive and predictive maintenance program including condition monitoring and vibration data review.
Provides technical support training as required.
Lead in “trouble-shooting” of mechanical equipment efforts.
Day-to-day support on other various reactive work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required:
Degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
5+ years of midstream and/or oil refinery operating experience with an emphasis on rotating equipment technical support, reliability and/or system design.
ISO Vibration Category II or higher certification.
Expertise in rotating equipment including, but not limited to centrifugal and positive displacement pumps used in process and pipeline service, re-rating centrifugal pumps, and other rotating equipment.
Proven experience in the design and application of process gas compressors, steam and gas turbines, process pumps, pipeline pumps, fans, and blowers.
Knowledge of API 610, 618, 619, 674, 676, 682 and RP 686.
Knowledge and experience in inspection of rotating machinery fabrication and performance testing procedures and evaluation.
Experience in root cause failure analysis for various equipment in processing facilities and pipeline systems.
Strong communications skills with a focus on teamwork and collaboration.
Demonstrated proficiency in standard PC based programs.
Familiarity with ASME B31.3 and B31.4.
Experience using 2D and 3D AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
Experience in creating and maintaining internal specifications and operating procedures.
Proactive and requires minimum supervision.
Consistently looks for efficiencies and opportunities to improve group work processes.
An organized self-starter with the ability to work under pressure on multiple projects at the same time.
Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract.
Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks.
Compliance with the Company’s drug and alcohol policy including pre-employment D&A testing.
