Job description: What you’ll do
Join our dynamic team as the Manager of Retail Construction, a high-profile role that will report to the Associate Vice-President of Construction & Design. In this exciting position, you’ll be leading, motivating, supporting, and training a team of Project Managers, external consultants, and general contractors to excel in all aspects of design, execution, and construction while delivering top-notch customer service to both internal and external stakeholders. You will also play a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the processes that enable efficient scaling and execution of projects for our Retail Construction team.
Oversee all facets of high-profile building development initiatives, encompassing design, construction, budget control, and operational requirements, while promoting project management best practices. You’ll also ensure that Project Managers maintain our high standards and take the lead on select high-priority or complex projects when necessary.
Develop Project Managers and support staff, reviewing technical deliverables to align results with construction pipeline and stakeholder expectations. Maintain standards for project meetings and approvals, following up on action items with team members.
Provide constructive feedback, mentorship, and structure for the team with a focus on process improvement and execution.
Collaborate with the Real Estate and Development team during the site acquisition, layout/design, and municipal approval phases of projects.
Oversee the design of all aspects of Canadian Tire Retail (& ancillary brands) construction projects in Ontario, ensuring compliance with project metrics and corporate design standards, with an emphasis on high value and functionality.
Manage planning and scheduling functions, establishing project milestone dates.
Handle the hiring of consultants/engineers for design drawings and specifications.
Procure all approvals and permits from relevant authorities.
Lead the preparation of tender packages, review bid submissions, and prepare contracts.
Make site visits and engage external resources as needed to manage project quality, schedule, and budget.
Provide project status updates to senior management and stakeholders.
What you bring
A minimum of 10 years+ of direct and progressive experience in retail/commercial (ICI) construction and design leadership.
Experience working in large owner-operator organizations or as an owner’s representative, navigating complex processes and internal stakeholders.
Willingness to travel 2-3 days per week and work beyond regular hours.
Must have a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle
Strong financial, business, and process acumen, with exceptional organizational skills.
Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Architecture, Engineering, or Project Management.
Superior interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and influence.
Expert-level knowledge and experience in the design and construction industry.
Excellent time management, analytical, organizational, negotiation, and communication skills.
Proficiency in Project Management software, Microsoft Office, Excel, and project scheduling tools.
