A mysterious and tragic incident has shocked residents of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, following the reported death of a yet-to-be-identified man who allegedly attempted to steal a revered statue of the Agemo deity.
The incident occurred at the Mafowoku roundabout along Folagbade Road in the early hours of Saturday, April 12, 2025. Residents woke up to the unsettling sight of the fallen golden Agemo statue—commissioned over two decades ago—and the lifeless body of a man believed to be the suspect behind the sacrilegious act.
A viral video from the scene, circulating across social media, showed the motionless body of a man dressed in a blue top lying near the damaged statue. While the exact cause of death remains unclear, some locals have attributed the incident to supernatural retribution.
Confirming the occurrence, a local resident, Hakeem Quadri, who claimed the incident took place directly in front of his house, described the moment residents realized something was wrong.
“The incident is real; it happened right in front of my house. We heard a commotion and came out to find that the Agemo statue had been removed. The man suspected of this act was lying there, dead,” Quadri told Punch.
He added that the body of the deceased was eventually taken to the mortuary by authorities.
