A Nigerian man has narrated a heartbreaking incident involving a fellow patient who passed away due to alleged medical negligence at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
The man, identified on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) as @LaceVine, shared that the patient in the bed next to his died of suffocation after a nurse reportedly authorized the man’s wife to feed him, despite medical instructions prohibiting oral feeding.
According to his account, the patient began struggling to breathe shortly after being fed pap.
Alarmed, the wife called for help, but the nurse allegedly ignored her for about ten minutes. By the time she realized the situation was serious, it was too late.
“While I was at LUTH, the person next to my bed died of suffocation because of the nurse’s negligence,” @LaceVine wrote. “The man wasn’t meant to eat yet, but the nurse gave the wife the go-ahead to feed him pap. He began experiencing breathing difficulties, and the wife called the nurse, but she was grumbling.”
“She didn’t respond until after 10 minutes when she saw it was serious. They began looking for suction catheters but couldn’t find any. Right in front of me, the man passed away.”
He further alleged that when the patient’s family arrived, all the nurses on duty—including the matron—quickly changed their clothes and went into hiding.
