Obi Levi Obieze, a native of Enugu State popularly known as Ezeani, has spoken out following his arrest over allegations of kidnapping and ritual killings.
The suspect, who was apprehended while attempting to flee Nigeria through a land border on a motorcycle, claims the charges against him are part of a politically motivated setup by rivals opposed to his ascension to traditional leadership.
Obieze, whose arrest has sparked outrage and fear across the region, was reportedly caught after the remains of unidentified individuals were discovered buried in a soakaway pit within his compound. Authorities believe the discovery points to ritualistic killings linked to his activities as a native doctor, an identity he now denies.
During an interrogation by an Immigration officer, Ezeani declared his innocence and described the situation as a ploy to ruin his reputation.
“It’s a political issue. It’s something politics. Fabrication against me because I will be next of king and some people in my village don’t want me to be that next of king. So, they are painting evil against me, front and back, so that I can fall,” he said.
Asked directly if he was a native doctor, Obieze responded, “No,” and instead claimed he is merely a businessman dealing in “okirika“ (second-hand clothes).
He further alleged that the chief of his village conspired against him: “Because of this kingship issue, they set me up. Someone that is working for them planted dead body in my soak away.”
Obieze maintained that he has a clean conscience, saying that those who are innocent should have no fear, as “the God of vengeance will defend me.”
