The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has revealed that God once gave him a stern warning never to leave the church or risk losing his firstborn child.
He made this striking disclosure during the June edition of the RCCG Holy Ghost Service, themed “Destined for Greatness (Part 2),” held in the early hours of Saturday at the Redemption City of God in Ogun State.
While teaching on divine direction and spiritual steadfastness, Pastor Adeboye expressed concern over a rising trend of church-hopping among young believers. He referred to a message delivered earlier in the service by his son, Pastor Leke Adeboye, and urged Christians to stay rooted where God has planted them.
Recalling his early Christian journey, the revered cleric said that when he was born again, several major ministries were making waves and appeared more attractive. However, he said God clearly instructed him to remain in RCCG.
“When I got born again, there were three major ministries that were making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to go from one to another. But God said to me, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will die,” he said.
Pastor Adeboye emphasised that despite his academic status as a university lecturer at the time, God led him to submit to the leadership of his spiritual mentor, who had no formal education.
“My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay,” he recounted.
The RCCG leader said the church’s headquarters was then located in a modest building in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, and the ministry was far from the global institution it is today.
He cautioned Christians against making decisions based solely on personal preference or popularity, urging them to prioritise divine guidance.
“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he advised.
Pastor Adeboye also clarified that his message was not an attempt to elevate RCCG above other denominations.
“I am not saying we are better than any other denomination,” he noted.
