The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, the state’s highest political decision-making body, has endorsed the leadership change in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
On Monday, 32 lawmakers impeached the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, citing allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Mojisola Meranda, the Deputy Speaker representing Apapa Constituency 1, was elected as the new Speaker.
According to Western Post, the GAC supported the lawmakers’ decision to remove Obasa and endorsed the new leadership under Meranda.
Speaking to journalists after meeting with the GAC, Meranda stated that the lawmakers sought and received the council’s blessings. She expressed gratitude, noting the assembly members were pleased with the GAC’s support for the leadership change.
The impeachment of Obasa was based on allegations of financial and statutory violations during his tenure as Speaker.
Before her elevation, Meranda served as the Assembly’s Chief Whip and Deputy Speaker.
Meanwhile, the Conference 57 of Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen in Lagos State has congratulated Meranda on her historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
In a statement by its Chairman, Alabi Kolade David, and Public Relations Officer, Olusesan Daini, the group praised Meranda’s dedication, competence, and commitment to public service. They described her emergence as a reflection of the state’s progressive values and inclusive governance principles.
The council chairmen also pledged their full support and collaboration with Meranda, expressing confidence in her ability to provide strong legislative leadership, drive development, and uphold democratic ideals.
