Ajuri Obari Ngelale (born November 13, 1986) is a politician and broadcast journalist from Nigeria who worked as President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson. He formerly served as President Muhammadu Buhari’s senior special adviser on public affairs and as a co-principal spokesperson for Bola Tinubu‘s presidential campaign council, which won the general election in Nigeria in 2023. He worked for Africa Independent Television as a top reporter and presenter.
Early Life & Education
Ajuri Ngelale is a Nigerian journalist who was born and raised in the United States but spent some of his boyhood in Ogoni, a small hamlet in Rivers state. Ajuri Ngelale was born on November 12, 1986, in his home state of Rivers State, Nigeria, and belongs to the Ogoni tribe.
His father is of Nigerian origin, while his mother is of German descent. Born on November 12th, the 38-year-old man comes from a notable lineage thanks to his parents’ notability. His father, Chief Precious Osaro Ngelale, was previously the Honourable Minister of State for Water Resources, and his mother was a German-American citizen.
When Ajuri Ngelale was five years old, his family relocated to Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. He completed his secondary schooling at the Government Secondary School in Port Harcourt.
Following his secondary education, he worked for many media outlets, including The Sun newspaper, where he advanced to the position of Assistant Editor. Ajuri Ngelale graduated from the University of Kansas in the United States.
Career
Ngelale spent a year performing national service with Africa Independent Television as a youth corps member, which marked the beginning of his media career. He was employed by AIT as an investigative reporter following his national service, and from 2011 to 2016, he served as a news editor, producer, and presenter.
State of the Nation (2012) and Diary from the Delta (2016) are two highly regarded public affairs documentaries that he created at AIT.
He left AIT in 2016 to work for Channels Television, where he co-anchored the well-liked public policy discussion show Sunrise Daily and, in partnership with the US Government’s Mandela Initiative, produced and presented Africa’s Future Leaders, a documentary about young African leaders who are improving underprivileged communities through their efforts. Ngelale served as President Buhari’s senior special adviser on public affairs following their 2019 election victory. He remained in that role until his departure in 2023. Ngelale was named the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Organization’s co-principal spokesperson in October 2022.
He made numerous appearances on international news networks like CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera in addition to national radio and television. Ngelale was named President Bola Tinubu’s official spokesperson on July 31, 2023. Ngelale was named Nigeria’s first special presidential envoy for climate change by President Tinubu on May 19, 2024.
In addition, he was named secretary of President Tinubu’s Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions and chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen, Nigeria’s first green industrial zone.
In order to address health concerns in his immediate family, Ngelale resigned indefinitely from his position as President Tinubu’s spokesperson on September 7, 2024. But according to national news sources, the resignation was due to a fear of being fired.
