The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), is introducing a new national ID card with payment and social service delivery capabilities.
The card, backed by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, will provide verifiable national identity features and enable access to government and private services, promote financial inclusion, and empower citizens.
Key features include machine-readable zones, biometric authentication, offline capability, and functionality as a debit/prepaid card.
Only registered citizens and legal residents with a National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to request the card.
