POSITION
The Department of African American Studies at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Part-Time Lecturer pool.
We welcome applications from individuals who are experienced and student centered to teach in the following subject areas:
- African American Culture
- African American History
- African American Literature
- Ethnic Studies
This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary.
APPOINTMENTS FROM THE PART-TIME POOL ARE TEMPORARY AND OFTEN MADE JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACADEMIC TERM. APPLICANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE ON VERY SHORT NOTICE.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidates must hold at least a Master’s degree in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field.
- Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field
- Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.
- Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities. Preference will be given to scholars demonstrating innovative approaches to interdisciplinary pedagogy.

The Department:
The Department of African American Studies is an interdisciplinary intellectual community committed to advancing knowledge about black people in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Africa. The department strives to interrogate the historical meanings and dimensions of slavery, colonialism, resistance, and freedom, and to explore their implications for contemporary political, social, and cultural expressions of black identity. In addition to analyzing the impact of slavery and freedom on Black life in the Americas, we also examine the issues that continue to shape and define Black communities in the post-Civil Rights Era United States and the contemporary Africa diaspora, including: Black intra-racial dynamics, gender relations, marriage and family patterns, mixed raced identities, sexuality, expressive forms, and hip-hop culture.

APPOINTMENT DATE AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The need for part-time faculty is greatest in Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall term begins in the late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term runs from the middle of January through the end of May. On rare occasions part-time faculty are needed during one of the Summer Session segments.
APPOINTMENT AND SALARY
All part-time faculty appointments are made as Lecturers, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the California Faculty Association. Initial appointments are for one semester only.
Classification Range: $4,530 – $6,056 per month
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $5,405 per month.
The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester. For a three-unit assignment, typical starting compensation ranges from $5,436 to $6,486 per semester.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department in accord with the faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and . These performance evaluations determine which lecturers will be retained for future and continued teaching assignments. And in some instances, syllabi, assignments and reading material will be reviewed by the departmental personnel committee.
