Music executive, Banky W opens up on how the Grammy-winning singer, Wizkid started from scratch and built his music career into one of the biggest brands ever.

In a video making rounds online, Banky W reminisced about his early days with the artist, whom he signed to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), long before Wizkid established his label, StarBoy Entertainment.

Banky W recalled Wizkid’s relentless dedication to music, describing him as a “studio rat” who struggled financially, barely affording studio time but making up for it with hours spent honing his craft in any studio that would let him stay.

Sharing the origin of the stage name, the musician turned politician revealed that the singer’s name “Wiz” was coined from being the fastest songwriter he had ever encountered.

“Wizkid for a long time in his life was not fortunate enough to afford or pay for studio time and so he was a studio rat as he will go to any studio where they will let him hang out and he would hang out all day and just wait, hope and pray for the end of the day for the engineers and producers to just take pity on him and say oya, come, come and record for 15 mins or 30 mins because he could not pay for his session.

“So, all day long, he would be working on hooks and melodies and just coming up with things in case he was given the opportunity to jump on the mic for five minutes. He did not have time to think about what to write at the moment, so that became his process.

“And now he is one of the fastest songwriters that I have ever encountered in my life, he will just sit, listen, and listen to music, he would start freestyling a melody that would become a song that the whole world would want to sing and that is where the name Wiz started from, his genius-level creation of melodies is at the spur of the moment.”

A Nigerian mother cries out in pain after her young son suffered a severe injury at school, allegedly caused by another student.

In a series of emotional posts, the mother known on X as @plantainshopper, shared her anger and distress over a deep gash on her son’s forehead, who was reportedly pushed by another student.

Upon arriving to pick up her son, she was shocked to see a “deep cut” on his forehead, stating how the teachers pleaded with her.

The child was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was given anesthesia to allow doctors to stitch the wound.

“I’m so angry right now,” she continued, describing the difficult experience of watching her son in pain. In her final update, she shared that the stitching was completed and her son was asleep in one of the hospital wards.

Former Department of State Services (DSS) operative Seyi Adetayo has urged immediate action against a new terrorist group, Lakurawa, warning Nigerians to acknowledge that the country is essentially at war.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program on Friday, Adetayo compared Lakurawa to other established terror groups like ISWAP, Boko Haram, and various bandit factions that have disrupted much of Nigeria’s Northeast region.

“Lakurawa will become another name that dominates our discourse on terror until Nigeria declares itself at war and implements measures to enhance military and intelligence operations,” Adetayo stated.

The Director of Defense Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, had previously confirmed in November that “Troops are confronted with Lakurawa in the Northwestern states of Sokoto and Kebbi.”

According to Buba, the group is linked to terrorist elements from the Sahel region, particularly from Mali and Niger, who have migrated into Nigeria due to regional instability. Their operations are reported to be concentrated in Kebbi and Sokoto states.

Security experts have partially attributed the group’s foothold to local communities in these states, criticizing them for initially accepting the group rather than reporting their presence to authorities.

The group’s influence has since expanded, leading to heightened security concerns.

Adetayo stressed that the Nigerian military needs significant reinforcement. “Massive recruitment into the army is essential as the current strength of our soldiers is insufficient. If left unchecked, more young boys will be drawn to these terror groups, turning Nigeria into a nation where movement becomes perilous,” he cautioned.

Offering a different perspective, retired military strategist Maj. Gen. Pat Akem noted that while the emergence of Lakurawa is serious, there is no need for panic.

He assured citizens that President Bola Tinubu has introduced proactive measures to counter the threat. “War should not be declared,” Akem argued.

“The president has already mandated the armed forces to act decisively against these bandits.”

Akem also emphasized that declaring war without the necessary resources would be counterproductive.

He highlighted the need to bolster the military’s reputation, cautioning against its involvement in policing and anti-banditry operations that he believes undermine its capabilities.

A Nigerian woman in the UK has raised concerns as her mother, who initially came to assist with her newborn, is now preparing to marry a widowed Caucasian neighbor.

The woman shared her story in a detailed statement online, expressing her dilemma over her mother’s intentions.

According to the woman, her mother arrived in the UK to help with her newborn but soon grew close to a neighbor, a widower, who has shown interest in marrying her and is working to arrange her immigration paperwork.

The mother, now unwilling to return to Nigeria, has told her daughter she is ready to stay and start a new life with him.

The woman’s post, shared anonymously, reveals the complexities of the situation. She explained that her father has been difficult throughout their marriage and has several children outside their family.

Despite his recent health issues, her mother had been his caregiver, leaving him temporarily to assist her daughter with the baby, with plans to return in February.

“My sisters, there’s trouble!” she wrote. “My mother came to the UK to help me with my newborn. My father, like the typical African man, has always been harsh and difficult. Popular Nigerian actress, Iyabo Ojo publicly declares her support for Omowunmi, the wife of the late singer Mohbad, unless proven guilty in a court of law.

It would be recalled that the singer passed away on September 12, 2023, under mysterious and controversial circumstances that remain unresolved to date.

The singer’s sudden death has spurred a flood of speculation and finger-pointing online, with some netizens casting suspicion on Omowunmi.

Speaking out amid the ongoing investigation, Iyabo Ojo stated that she would stand firmly by Omowunmi unless proven guilty by a court of law.

The actress shared her thoughts during an Instagram Live session, where she criticized those spreading unsubstantiated claims about Omowunmi’s involvement in her husband’s death.

Iyabo challenged social media users to provide concrete evidence to the authorities if they truly believed in the allegations rather than resorting to public speculation.

“A lot of people are angry that I’m supporting Wunmi. There is no concrete evidence that she is guilty. Until the law proves her guilty, I will continue to support her.

“If they like, they should drag and curse me. I will not stop being nice to her. Until the judge says otherwise with evidence, proof beyond every reasonable doubt.

“Also, everyone who has said they have evidence should take it to the right authorities. I don’t make social media judgements; there are laws in the country,” she affirmed.

 

Reports indicate that at least 100 individuals have been abducted following a brutal assault by suspected terrorists on seven villages located in the Wanke district of Gusau Local Government Area (LGA) in Zamfara State.

This alarming incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced in the region, as communities continue to grapple with the threat of violence and instability.

Local authorities are currently investigating the situation and coordinating efforts to rescue those taken captive and restore safety to the affected areas.

The assailants reportedly invaded the communities on Tuesday on motorbikes — wielding sophisticated firearms. They shot sporadically before taking residents captive. 

A chief imam who recently regained freedom from bandits was said to be among the captives.

One survivor said the affected communities remain under siege, with many residents fleeing for fear of further attacks.

He noted that over 50 people were taken near Sabon Layi, with another 50 abducted around Dogon Hayi.

He said locals are still counting the missing, noting that terrified residents scampered for safety.

“The terrorists chased people like animals,” he said.

According to the survivor, the attackers pursued people on motorbikes, tracked women to their homes, while others attempting to flee were intercepted and herded into the bushes.

The terrorists also stole motorcycles, farm produce, mobile phones, and ransacked shops.

“Officials at Wanke have been informed, but no action has been taken so far,” the survivor added.

“We are faced with this calamity and had to leave. There are no animals left here. 

“When night falls, everyone is on edge; staying in the communities has become extremely dangerous.”
