Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi has broken silence following a traumatic medical emergency that left him in an induced coma after undergoing surgery for a ruptured intestine.
The 27-year-old sustained the internal injury during Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City in the Premier League.
After initial treatment, further scans revealed the extent of the damage, necessitating immediate surgery and a temporary coma for recovery stabilization.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Awoniyi thanked supporters and the wider football community for their overwhelming encouragement during his ordeal.
“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career,” he wrote. “But through it all, I have felt the love… I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, smiling, and in good spirits.”
He extended his appreciation to Nottingham Forest teammates, staff and fans, whose visits and messages helped buoy his morale.
“Keep believing and keep pushing,” Awoniyi urged his teammates as Forest fight for Champions League spot. “I’m with you all the way and I can’t wait to be back.”
The former Union Berlin striker also acknowledged the prayers and support from his native Nigeria, noting, “I see them, I feel them, and I carry them with me every day as I recover.”
