A 23-year-old young woman and her husband have received unexpected news that they are expecting not just one but two sets of identical twins at the same time..
The Kempsey couple, Ebony Apps and Jayden, who are in their early twenties (23 and 21, respectively) and had previously faced the heartbreak of two miscarriages, were left in utter shock when a routine ultrasound revealed the extraordinary nature of their pregnancy.
The journey began when the young couple, actively trying to conceive, received the joyful news of Ebony’s pregnancy in September of the previous year.
Overcoming the challenges of previous losses, the wife, Ebony was overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a mother. Little did they know, their joy would multiply exponentially.
At first, they expected just one set of identical twins, but their world turned upside down during the second ultrasound on October 26.
“We went to our first ultrasound expecting just one baby, then we were told it was twins.
“Then at our second scan, we were told we were having quadruplets that were two sets of identical twins,’ Ebony said.
The attending doctor, breaking the news, revealed that they were not only expecting quadruplets but two sets of identical twins, which is rare even in multiple pregnancies.
The expecting mother’s condition, carrying two sets of identical twins, was described by the doctor as exceptionally rare.
“Our doctor told us that quadruplet pregnancies are around one in 700,000, and being pregnant with two sets of identical twins is even more rare.
“A nurse said that in her 30 years of experience, she has never seen this happen, Ebony said.
According to CNN, the likelihood of such a pregnancy is approximately one in 70 million.
The pregnant woman, Ebony confessed that she almost fainted upon hearing the unexpected news, while Jayden, her husband, was rendered speechless by the magnitude of the revelation.
‘We both went into a state of utter shock and we were so worried about how we would care and provide for four newborns, but I know that we will manage it.
Despite the initial shock, the couple is now preparing for the arrival of their quadruplets, expected in June.
“Considering we found out that we are having four babies rather than just the one that we thought we would have, everything is working out.
“We are moving into a new house next week and we are in the process of getting a bigger car too.
“I’m feeling pretty good about everything, but I am still really nervous about the birth, the pregnant woman said.
‘We have our gender reveal coming up in the next few weeks, and I am so excited to find out what we’re having. It’ll be nice to know what I am growing,’ she added.
Due to the unusual nature of the pregnancy, the woman will undergo a scheduled C-section in April.
