Barcelona have presented midfielder Frenkie de Jong with a new contract offer that includes a significant reduction in his wages for next season.
De Jong, who is currently the highest-paid player at the club, is said to have earned nearly €25 million this season.
The Dutchman’s wages were initially inflated due to wage deferrals agreed upon during the pandemic under former President Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Barcelona is now looking to lower his salary, and de Jong is considering the new offer, which would extend his contract until 2029, Football Espana reports.
Despite being a key player for Barcelona, de Jong’s performances have not consistently matched his high wages.
Barcelona is also open to listening to offers for the player this summer as they aim to make significant sales to alleviate their financial situation.
De Jong holds leverage in negotiations due to his contract expiring in 2026. If he decides not to renew his deal, he could become one of the highest earners in European football.
