Duties
If selected for this position, the AUSA will primarily defend the federal government, its agencies, and employees in a range of subject matters, including medical malpractice, employment discrimination, civil rights violations, and environmental matters. Typical work assignments will include:
- The attorney will represent federal interests in bankruptcy court and state court foreclosure actions.
- The attorney will handle investigation and prosecution of affirmative civil cases, including under the False Claims Act, to obtain damages and civil monetary penalties for fraud committed upon federal programs and contracts.
- The attorney will engage in all aspects of litigation, including case development, filing affirmative pleadings, motions practice, discovery, settlement negotiations, and trial.
- The attorney will work with complex statutes and regulations, engage in a collaborate environment, and will manage a variety of cases at once.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

- J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants should possess superior oral and written communication skills, legal research skills, excellent analytical ability, good judgment, courtroom skills, appellate litigation experience, and a demonstrated capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. In addition, applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney’s pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $77,381 to $183,400 which includes 21.17% locality pay and a cost of living allowance (COLA) of 9.28%.
Maximum pay with locality and COLA is limited to $183,400 in 2023. For additional details on cost of living allowances (COLA), please refer to the OPM website .
