Job description: The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level rank in Materials Engineering. Exceptional candidates at the full Professor rank may be considered.
We welcome applications from scholars with research in materials engineering. Expertise in physical metallurgy that involves understanding the fundamentals of physical metallurgy (e.g., liquid-solid or solid-solid transformations) for a variety of metallic systems, and advanced processing of emerging alloys would be an asset. The successful candidate will develop research and industrial partnerships throughout the Faculty of Engineering and the University of Alberta, and with local industry, multinational companies, and provincial and federal funding agencies. Interdisciplinary work and collaboration are important in our department, and there are several groups to foster relationships with, including those focusing on welding, additive manufacturing, alloy design and processing, corrosion and mechanical properties, coatings and tribology, and pipeline materials.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in materials engineering, metallurgical engineering, or a closely related field. They will also have a record of publication in reputable, peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings as well as research and teaching experience and skills. A demonstrated record of service and volunteerism broadly related to their research, teaching, and/or equity, diversity, and inclusivity will be an asset. They are expected to be or become a licensed Professional Engineer through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA, ). Licensure must be obtained within five years from the date of hire. The successful candidate will establish a research program of independent and cooperative research and industry partnerships. They will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering, and contribute to the future of the department and university through service.
The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering is passionate about the development of innovative solutions for the world’s most pressing issues since our first students graduated in 1928 and we are growing every year. We have a complement of more than 45 faculty members with research covering all major areas of chemical and materials engineering. In materials engineering, the complement of faculty presently cover the areas of mineral processing, computational materials science, hydrometallurgy, materials process engineering, microstructural characterization, welding processes and welding metallurgy, energy related materials, electrochemistry, wear, and fracture. We celebrate creativity, diversity, perseverance, and a collaborative spirit and recognize the importance of academic excellence in conjunction with work/life balance, interdisciplinary research, and mentorship. Our graduate program attracts students who are dedicated to developing in their area of expertise from schools worldwide and presently has an enrolment of around 350 graduate students, including approximately 190 PhD students.
