Tolu Arokodare scored his first international goal as Nigeria battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against Russia in Friday’s friendly in Moscow.

The Super Eagles were forced to chase the game after a 27th-minute own goal from Semi Ajayi, who turned in a cross from Dmitri Krugovoy under pressure from Mikhail Komlichenko.

Despite dominating possession, Nigeria lacked cutting edge in the final third during a disjointed first half.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru had the best chance to equalise before the break, but his effort was well saved by Russian goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

Russia threatened to double their lead early in the second half, with Glushenkov and Melekhin going close. However, Nigeria eventually utilized on a defensive lapse when Safonov’s errant pass in the 71st minute was punished by substitute Arokodare, who finished confidently to bring the sides level.

Russia pushed for a winner late on, forcing Maduka Okoye into a string of key saves, including efforts from Batrakov and Barinov.

Nigeria held strong, with defensive substitutions helping to preserve the result.
